Rum Rivière du Mât

The story Rivière du Mât

Rivière Du Mât is a rum produced on Reunion Island. The distillery produces traditional, fresh and mentholated rums, among the most awarded in recent years. It is equipped with two distillation columns. The older, single column produces powerful rums. The more recent triple column produces lighter rums. The distillery takes its name from Réunion's main river, in the north-west of the island. It is the largest of the three smoking local distilleries, with a theoretical capacity of 40,000 l of rum per day.
The distillery was founded in 1886, but moved to its current production site in Saint-Benoît in 1984. It is supplied with molasses by the island's two active sugar mills, but also produces a small quantity of rum from pure cane juice. Since January 22, 2015, Réunion's rums have benefited from a Geographical Indication for all types of locally produced rum. Sugar cane cultivation occupies 57% of useful agricultural land, producing around 60,000 tonnes of molasses. This makes it possible to produce just over 5 million liters of pure traditional rum alcohol, compared with 70,000 liters of pure cane juice rum.
The distillates produced by Rivière du Mât are casked and aged separately before being blended. Rivière du Mât has a large majority of French oak barrels (new or ex-cognac) with a capacity of 400 l. Christian Vergier, one of France's leading experts on ageing in oak barrels (a winemaker in Burgundy, he also advises Rozelieures, Maison La Mauny and Trois Rivières), was responsible for sourcing the barrels and perfecting the ageing and/or rotation techniques. Thanks to the perfect vertical integration of its production chain (sugar refinery and distillery), Rivière Du Mât is able to control all stages of production, producing rums that are both traditional and highly contemporary.
