Cigars El Rey Del Mundo

The story El Rey Del Mundo

El Rey del Mundo cigars were created by Emilio Ohmstedt in 1848, at the same time as Sancho Panza. The brand was very small at the time. In 1870, when Mr. Ohmstedt died, the brand was transferred to Mr. Antonio Allones, who had immigrated to Havana and worked in the tobacco industry.
El Rey del Mundo The name Allones stands for "The King of the World". From the outset, Antonio Allones decided that this brand should be one of the highest representatives of Cuban know-how, and to this end he used some of the best tobaccos from the Vuelta Abajo region. In 1905, the company was transferred to Diaz Hermanos y Cia under the ownership of Candido Vega Diaz, who later renamed it Rey del Mundo Cigar Company in the late 1930s.

In the 1940s, the factory was located at 852 Padre Valera Street in Havana. Other brands included Flor de Rafaël Gonzales, Sancho Panza and the famous Don Candido (owned by Candido Vega Diaz).

By the 1950s, El Rey del Mundo cigars had already established a solid reputation. They were the most expensive cigars in the world at the time, and were the preferred cigars of wealthy aficionados.

In the sixties and seventies, El Rey del Mundo cigars maintained their status as great Cuban cigars. In fact, the brand was warmly recommended by Zino Davidoff himself in his 1967 book "The Cigar Connoisseur's Book"; saying that every cigar connoisseur owed it to himself, noblesse oblige, to own a few boxes of this brand's cigars, as well as Rafaël Gonzales.

Cigars El Rey del Mundo became less popular in the eighties, in favor of stronger styles. Their export production hovered around 1% of Habanos S.A. 's total export volume in 2000 and 2001.
