Cigars H. Upmann
H. Upmann cigars are produced exclusively from tobacco harvested in the Vuelta Abajo region and hand made. The H. Upmann brand was founded in 1844 and is one of the oldest cigar brands.
In 1844, German banker Herman Upmann opened an office in Havana, enabling him to send cigars home to Europe. Upmann sensed a business opportunity and invested in a cigar company in 1844, launching the H. Upmann brand in the process. His bank disappeared in the 1920s, but the cigar brand endured.
Upmann is often credited with the idea of selling cigars in cedar boxes. Some of these boxes, marked " H. Upmann ", were used by other cigar makers before the Upmanns launched their company.
By the end of the 19th century, the H. Upmann brand had already won several international awards, including seven gold medals. An image of the latter adorns the brand's cigar boxes.
