Although in the Christian tradition, Easter commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ, the origins of this celebration can be traced back to the Jewish feast of Pesach, which refers to the biblical episode of the Exodus, when Moses freed the Jewish people from slavery in Egypt. In more ancient times, the origins of this custom can be traced back to a pagan celebration whose aim was simply to celebrate the arrival of spring and the awakening of nature in all its splendour. What each of these traditions has in common is that they all take place on the first Sunday following the arrival of spring.
